“AW DESIGNER OF THE YEAR” IN AUGMENTED REALITY
The COVID pandemic has spurred the world to find new ways to come together, with ingenuity taking the limelight. Our augmented reality AW Awards go to show how rethinking the way we do things can create innovative new solutions while expanding our audience.
Now regarded as the most prestigious and important design award in the European magazine industry, “AW Designer of the Year” will be awarded for the 25th time in 2021. Whereas the exclusive event and awards ceremony were previously hosted during imm cologne with the kind support of KALDEWEI, this year we’re transporting the celebrations into the digital realm to mark the occasion. Primarily due to the COVID pandemic. However, one thing became clear when we were planning the event: we have set new standards for digital forms with the augmented reality AW Awards.
This year’s award went to 64-year-old Italian Piero Lissoni, who has made a major contribution to the new international style that heralds from Italy. Readers of the AW anniversary issue were able to take a trip through the artist’s exclusive 3D exhibition and explore it independently on their phones. Exciting insider information on Lissoni properties from various years was also released. The virtual space has allowed more visitors than ever before to visit the exhibition from the far corners of the world, bringing design art directly to the design-savvy target audience.
